Organisers delighted with response to call for Athletes Village architects

Over 500 online registrations representing 30 countries have been received since the Lend Lease led consortium and the Architecture Foundation launched their international call for architects to design the Athletes Village for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games on Thursday 31 May.

“We are delighted with the way the international architectural community has responded to this opportunity,” says Lend Lease Europe Chairman Nigel Hugill.

“There is a palpable sense of excitement at the prospect of contributing to the creation of something extraordinary – a place which can shine out on the global sporting stage in 2012 whilst going on to help shape the new city agenda.”

Practices can register at www.villagearchitectspanel.com to receive the project brief and have until 28 June to enter submissions.

The international search will end on 31 July with the appointment of a panel of around 40 architectural practices. This group will then compete for commissions to design individual elements of the new high-density residential district – a project with an estimated value of £2 billion which involves the development of approximately 4,200 residential dwellings and related accommodation.

Commissions will vary from individual buildings and pavilions to much larger projects. All firms appointed to the panel will be eligible for commissions, irrespective of their size.

Lend Lease and its partners First Base and East Thames were selected by London & Continental Railways and the Olympic Delivery Authority in March 2007 as preferred Development Partner for Zones 2-7 of Stratford City – a remit which includes the Athletes Village.
